Virginia Farming named “Outstanding News Series” by
broadcast organization

Harrisonburg - The Virginia Association of Broadcasters recently named
Virginia Farming as the “Outstanding News Series for 2007.” The award was
presented at a recent conference in Virginia Beach. The weekly agricultural news
and issues program is produced and distributed by
WVPT, Virginia’s Public Television. Along with the award for Outstanding
News Series, WVPT was also named recipient of awards for the “Best Web site” and
“Best Station Promotion/Contest” for it’s Kids’ Book Festival.
“WVPT is honored and very proud to receive these awards,” said WVPT President
and General Manager David Mullins. “They are indicative of the types of quality
projects that WVPT produces throughout the year.” Mullins said that each award
represents “a product of our mission to make a difference in the lives of our
audience, and are examples of our vision to connect the residents of our viewing
area to each other, to their country and to the world through the use of
broadcast television, the internet and community/educational outreach projects.”
Veteran broadcaster Jeff Ishee is the producer and host of Virginia Farming and
said he was pleased with the award. “It is a great honor to be recognized by my
peers in the broadcasting industry with this award,” said Ishee. “We strive not
only to keep farmers informed about events and news in agriculture today, but to
make the general public aware of the complex issues associated with the food and
farm industry.”
During the Virginia Farming series, Ishee reports on a wide variety of
commodities raised in Virginia as well as weather conditions, agribusiness,
legislative issues, and farm safety. He invites guests from across the state to
discuss Virginia’s poultry, beef, dairy, crop, wine, seafood, timber,
aquaculture and related industries. Ishee interviews everyone from young farmers
to senior farm leaders. The series features in-depth interviews, news,
statistics and even bluegrass music.
“Virginia Farming” is seen weekly across the nation on the RFD-TV network. This
series also airs on Blue Ridge Public Television, serving 29 counties in
southwest Virginia; WCVE, serving the Richmond, Virginia area; WHTJ, serving the
Charlottesville, Virginia area; and on West Virginia Public Television.
