June 16: Large Animal Composting Workshop; Reading, PA; With pending regulations to the rendering process, the availability and economics of using rendering as a source of mortality disposal is becoming more difficult. Composting is one of the approved mortality disposal methods, but it needs to be done correctly. Penn State Cooperative Extension hosts this workshop to discuss the proper site placement for large animal composting, how to setup composting piles, and what routine maintenance is needed to ensure success. June 18: Horse Pasture Walk, Ellicott City, Maryland; The MDA and the Univ. of MD have partnered to offer an exciting Pasture Walk at the Univ. of MD Equine Rotational Grazing and Demonstration site. June 20: Integrated Parasite Management (IPM) Workshop, Princess Anne, Md.; Hosted by Maryland Cooperative Extension at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. The IPM Workshop is an opportunity for sheep and goat owners to learn strategies for recognizing parasite loads in their animals. This hands-on, interactive program is designed to assist sheep and goat owners in reducing the amount of deworming medication they use through a number of strategies for recognizing parasite loads, including use of the FAMACHA© chart. The program will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Center for Food Science and Technology building. The workshop fee is $20 and participants will receive FAMACHA charts for use with their own animals. Lunch will be provided. Pre-registration and payment required no later than Tuesday, June 16, and payment must be made in advance. June 22: North Carolina Youth Dairy Day; Statesville, NC; This program will educate youth on animal and food aspects of the North Carolina Dairy Industry. Various "hands-on" 30-minute workshops will be held. Learn about: dairy judging, skill-a-thon, quiz bowl, fitting and showmanship, and dairy foods. June 24: Agritourism Workshop, Keysville, Va.; This workshop is a cooperative effort of VDACS, Virginia Tech Community Viability, Virginia Tourism and VECTEC and will feature an overview of agritourism in Virginia, marketing your agritourism enterprise, Internet marketing and customer service. July 28: North Carolina Egg Grading School for Small Producers; Raleigh, NC; The class is directed at new and established small producers of naturally/organic eggs, extension agents, and purchasers of locally grown products. Come to learn about the proper methods of grading and evaluating the internal and external quality of shell eggs. This will include a review of the North Carolina Egg Law and components which will apply to small producers. The class will include both lecture material and hands-on laboratories.
