Ag Census data now searchable by ZIP code
November 10, 2024 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) has released 2022 Census of Agriculture data tabulated by zip code. This allows users to explore farm characteristics at a local level. The zip code tabulations are available through Quick Stats, NASS’s online data query tool.
The new feature allows you to search for an incredible amount of data, as specific as you like. For example, you can search to see:
how many female farmers are there in Churchville, Maryland (ZIP 21028)
how many farms in ZIP code 80835 (Simla, Colorado) are raising sheep
how many farms in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania (ZIP 17201) have access to broadband internet
how many orchards are located in ZIP code 28739 (Henderson County, NC)
The amount of data available for your own locality is vast.
For example, we wanted to find which ZIP codes in Virginia had the most farming operations for the most recent Ag Census (2022. We specified what we wanted by selecting an array of choices, sorted the results, and here's what we found:
