Big changes seen in national hog inventory


A recent report from the USDA indicates the total number of hogs and pigs in the U.S. on December 1st, 2021 was 74.201 million head, down 4% from December 1st, 2020.


The market hog inventory was 68.021 million head, 4% below a year ago, with the breeding herd at 6.18 million head, up slightly on the year. For the market category, by weight, hogs and pigs weighing less than 50 pounds were 21.174 million head, and 4%, and the 50 to 119 pound category was 19.185 million head, 3% lower, while the 120 to 179 pound category was 14.809 million head and the number of hogs and pigs weighing more than 180 pounds was 12.853 million head, both 6% below last year.



Arkansas: Inventory: 116,000 head, down 8% from December 1st, 2020; Market: 71,000 head, 14% lower than a year ago; Breeding: 45,000 head, 5% more than last year


Illinois: Inventory: 5.35 million head, down 2% from December 1st, 2020; Market: 4.76 million head, 3% lower than a year ago; Breeding: 590,000 head, 7% more than last year


Indiana: Inventory: 4.35 million head, down 2% from December 1st, 2020; Market: 4.09 million head, 3% lower than a year ago; Breeding: 260,000 head, 4% more than last year


Iowa: Inventory: 23.8 million head, down 3% from December 1st, 2020; Market: 22.88 million head, 3% lower than a year ago; Breeding: 920,000, 3% less than last year


Kansas: Inventory: 1.99 million head, down 3% from December 1st, 2020; Market: 1.825 million head, 3% lower than a year ago; Breeding: 165,000 head, 3% less than last year


Michigan: Inventory: 1.16 million head, down 11% from December 1st, 2020; Market: 1.05 million head, 12% lower than a year ago; Breeding: 110,000 head, 10% less than last year


Minnesota: Inventory: 8.9 million head, down 5% from December 1st, 2020; Market: 8.35 million head, 6% lower than a year ago; Breeding: 550,000 head, 2% more than last year


Missouri: Inventory: 3.45 million head, down 8% from December 1st, 2020; Market: 3.02 million head, 9% lower than a year ago; Breeding: 430,000 head, 2% less than last year


Nebraska: Inventory: 3.6 million head, down 5% from December 1st, 2020; Market: 3.16 million head, 7% lower than a year ago; Breeding: 440,000 head, 7% more than last year


Ohio: Inventory: 2.75 million head, up 2% from December 1st, 2020; Market: 2.55 million head, 2% higher than a year ago; Breeding: 200,000 head, 5% less than last year


South Dakota: Inventory: 2.01 million head, down 1% from December 1st, 2020; Market: 1.735 million head, 1% lower than a year ago; Breeding: 275,000 head, 2% less than last year


Tennessee: Inventory: 305,000 head, up 17% from December 1st, 2020; Market: 275,000 head, 17% higher than a year ago; Breeding: 30,000 head, 20% more than last year


Wisconsin: Inventory: 370,000 head, unchanged from December 1st, 2020; Market: 318,000 head, 2% higher than a year ago; Breeding: 52,000 head, 10% less than last year
