Michigan harvested potato acreage increased by 1,500 acres in 2024

Michigan's 2024 potato crop is forecast to be 22.2 million hundredweight (cwt), up 3 percent from a year ago, according to Marlo D. Johnson, Director, USDA NASS, Great Lakes Regional Office. Planted acres, at 51,000, increased 1,000 acres from last year. Harvested acres, at 50,500, were up 1,500 from 2023. Average yield, forecasted at 440 cwt per acre, was unchanged from the previous year. The first potato stocks estimate for the 2024 crop year will be released December 18, 2024.

Nationally, production of potatoes for the 2024 crop year is forecast at 418 million cwt, down 5 percent from last year. Planted acreage, at 928,000 acres, is down 1 percent from the June estimate and down 4 percent from last season. Area harvested, at 923,100 acres, is down 4 percent from the previous year. The yield forecast, at 453 cwt per acre, is down 5 cwt from last year’s yield.
