Michigan ranks #1 in U.S. for tart cherry production; #2 for apples

Michigan was the second largest apple-producing State in the United States in 2023, according to Marlo D. Johnson, Director of the USDA NASS, Great Lakes Regional Office.


Michigan apple production, at 1.34 billion pounds, was down 1 percent from the record-high 2022 crop. The farm-level value of utilized production was $350 million.



Michigan growers raised apples on 37,000 acres in 2023.


Michigan tart cherry production was 133 million pounds, down 26 percent from 2022. The farm-level value of utilized production was $22.6 million. Michigan remained the largest tart cherry-producing State. The 2023 marketing year average price of $0.173 per pound was down $0.031 from 2022.


Blueberry production in Michigan was 87.5 million pounds, up 26 percent from 2022. Michigan growers harvested 16,900 acres in 2023. The farm level value of utilized production was $120 million.
