Pennsylvania trout sales up by 24%; Keystone State now ranks second nationally in trout value of sales

HARRISBURG, PA - The total value of fish sales received by trout growers in Pennsylvania totaled $9.15 million for 2024, up 24% from 2023. Pennsylvania accounted for 8% of the total value of fish sold in the United States, ranking Pennsylvania second nationally behind Idaho, according to David Knopf, Regional Director of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Northeastern Regional Office.

The number of trout 12 inches and longer sold during 2024 totaled 940 thousand fish, up 8% from the previous year. The average price per pound was $5.05, down 25 cents from 2023. The value of sales for the 2024 marketing year was $6.52 million, up 4% from 2023.


Distributed Trout


Trout distributed for restoration, conservation, enhancement, or recreational purposes, primarily by State and Federal hatcheries, included 4.72 million 6"- 12" fish. The estimated value of all trout distributed totaled $13.85 million, up 3% from 2023.


Trout Losses


Total losses of all trout intended for sale were 391 thousand fish during 2024.
