Turkey production trending downward
Charleston, West Virginia-The number of turkeys raised in the mid-Atlantic region is variable this year. West Virginia turkey production during 2020 is forecast to be 3.3 million birds, up 6 percent from 2019. North Carolina should be producing 30.0 million turkeys, down 3 percent from a year ago. Virginia is up 2 percent from last year at 16.3 million turkeys.
The total number of turkeys raised in the United States during 2020 is forecast at 222 million birds, down 3 percent from the number raised during 2019. The largest turkey producing state is Minnesota, at 39.0 million turkeys, down 2 percent from the previous year. Arkansas is up 3 percent from the previous year at 31.0 million turkeys produced. Missouri produced 16.0 million turkeys, down 3 percent from the previous year.
Over the past decade, commercial turkey production in the U.S. is down nearly 10 percent.
