Ukraine grain exports returning to "normal"

August 29 - It looks like the agriculture industry in Ukraine is in the recovery process. A recent report indicates Ukraine is on course to ship nearly as much grain this month as it did before the Russian invasion in February.

According to various reports, more than 720,000 tons of grain onboard 33 ships have sailed from Ukraine over the past several weeks. Another 18 are now loading or waiting for permission to leave Ukrainian ports.

Officials attribute the turnaround to what they describe as “intensive international cooperation.”

Factoids:

  • Ukraine is the world's seventh-largest wheat producer.

  • More than 55 percent of Ukraine’s land area is arable land.

  • Agriculture provides employment for 14 percent of Ukraine’s population.

  • Ukraine supplies nearly two-thirds of the world’s sunflower meal
