VA corn yields down 15 bushels per acre in 2023; Soybeans down 4 bpa

RICHMOND, VA - (October 12, 2023) - Corn production in Virginia was forecast at 57.0 million bushels, up slightly from the previous crop. Yield was estimated at 152.0 bushels per acre, down 15.0 bushels from the 2022 level. Acres for harvest as grain were estimated at 375,000 acres, up 35,000 acres from 2022.


Soybean production for Virginia is forecast at 21.1 million bushels, decreased 16% from 2022. Yield was estimated at 37.0 bushels per acre, down 4.0 bushels from a year ago.


Virginia cotton production is projected to be 190,000 bales, down 10% from last year. Cotton yields are forecast to average 1,140 pounds per acre, up 9 pounds per acre from the previous year. Producers expect to harvest 80,000 acres, down 10,000 acres from 2022.


Peanut farmers in Virginia anticipate harvesting 133 million pounds for 2023, up 6% from last year. Acres expected to be harvested total 29,000 acres, up 1,000 from last year. Producers expect a yield of 4,600 pounds per acre, up 100 pounds from 2022.
